Designers Are Giving the Landfills a Break

Category: Musing

Ever since I saw the movie Pretty in Pink, I’ve been fascinated with reusing and repurposing clothes. I had the most fabulous opportunity this week to go to a “designer repurposing event” and got to bring in an old denim jacket that I never wear anymore to have it refreshed by designer Simon Ungless, who collaborates with couturier Alexander McQueen and is now doing a collab with actress and filmmaker Angelia Jolie.

He adds a punk perspective to old clothing to encourage us to rewear what we already have and not buy more clothing. Did you know that every year, 92 million tons of textile waste ends up in landfills globally? More than 100 billion garments are produced annually, and only 1% of them are recycled into new garments. The average American throws away 81 pounds of clothing a year and purchases 59 pieces of clothing a year (increased from 28 pieces in 1995).
